A EUROPEAN TRAVELER'S VIEW OF BRAZIL IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

This article depicts the views left by the Italian traveller Affonso Lomonaco about Brazil in his book Al Brazile1 . I show, that, as his itinerary was limited only to places where the railroad served, his accounts about the Brazilian Society were limitary to what he saw in the urban environments. Also, because he was a city born european, his impressions are presented deeply marked by burgeois and racist values.

Flávia Arlanch Martins Oliveira, Paulista State University UNESP

Possui graduação em Graduação Em História pela Universidade de São Paulo (1970), mestrado em História Econômica pela Universidade de São Paulo (1977) , doutorado em História Econômica pela Universidade de São Paulo (1992) e Pós Doutorado pela Universidade de Nápoles/Itália(1998). Atualmente é professor assistente doutor da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Campus de Assis. Tem experiência na área de História, com ênfase em História do Brasil República, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: cidade, cultura, política, identidade e imigração.
