Abstract

The Proconsult Case was an attempt to electoral fraud in the 1982 Rio de Janeiro governor election aimed at giving PDS candidate Wellington Moreira Franco a victory over PDT candidate Leonel Brizola. The main objective is to analyze the dissemination of the Proconsult Case in the 1989 presidential campaign of Leonel Brizola through the two main Rio newspapers - Jornal do Brasil and O Globo. It will seek to analyze not only such an episode being specifically taken up or recalled in the campaign by the journals, but Brizola's mentions and speeches about possible fraud in the 1989 election, as well as insistent criticism of the pedetist against opinion polls. It may be pointed out that the Proconsult Case did not die in 1982 and continued to yield discussions. Brizola always sought to resume this episode to talk about possible fraud.
