Luis Saia and the example of Casa de Câmara and Cadeia de Atibaia (1958-1961)

Despite the theoretical trajectory about the theme of conservation of cultural assets, carrying out rigorous restoration has not become a simple task. The consensus still valid, represented by the Venice Charter, demanded a period of reflection, which has been consolidated based on the contributions of permanent practice, in turn, attentive to the theoretical principles under discussion. Within this perspective lies the study of the restorations performed by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - IPHAN [National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute] since its creation in 1937. Upon investigation of the emblematic case of intervention conducted by Luis Saia in the Casa de Câmara [town hall] and Cadeia de Atibaia [Atibaia Jail], between 1958 and 1961, we intend to contribute to the contextualisation of the conceptual and technical paradigms associated to the inaugural experience and repercussions, many of which are in evidence till today.
