Lexical Register Variation in a Legal Context
An Analysis of Court Documents from the São Paulo Court of Justice (1914-1940)

This ongoing study investigates spelling variation in the lexical record within procedural documents from the state of São Paulo between 1914 and 1940, focusing on the orthographic and lexical transformations observed during this period. Based on a survey across different judicial districts — such as São Bento do Sapucaí, Araçatuba, and Igarapava — regional discrepancies are identified in the adoption of modernized spellings, such as ofício replacing officio and mês instead of mez. The results indicate that the incorporation of these forms did not occur uniformly, being conditioned by institutional factors, the training of clerks, and regional cultures. The analysis reveals a prolonged coexistence between competing forms and suggests that graphic variation, within the legal domain, is not reduced to a linear process of modernization, but rather a part of historically stabilized scribal practices. The study contributes to the understanding of regional dynamics that shape the standardization of Portuguese in Brazil.
