THE BILAQUIANA SOFT IRONY IN GAZETA DE NOTÍCIAS

The chronicle earned its importance in Brazil since the press modernization in the middle of the 19th century. This genre became popular mainly in the so called Federal Capital Rio de Janeiro, in a concomitant way to the creation of some important daily newspapers that started to allow the edition of heterogeneous texts such as the chronicle. Watching that genre consolidation in the end-of-the-century issues and its acceptance, mainly among the carioca society readers at the 20th century beginning, this article aims to analyze texts of “Crônica” a weekly column, edited by the poet and journalist Olavo Bilac in Gazeta de Notícias (1897-1908), where rhetorical resources as the irony stand out. Through the bilaquiana writing analysis, we tried to bring out some linguistic and literary mechanisms used by the journalist in the attempt to convince his readers about the social and cultural benefits that come from sanitary and urbanistic reformations captained by carioca municipality.
