This article analyzes the opening of consular representations in North Africa between 1850 and 1889. At the same time as the Brazilian Empire sought to expand consumer markets for its agricultural products, especially coffee, and to attract migrants. With that sought to portray itself as a liberal and progressive and equal standing with the other European powers. This process of expansion clashes with the neo-colonialist expansion in this region in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
