Mulheres abolicionistas ocupando o espaço urbano e social da cidade do Recife

Abstract

In this article we analyze the extent of anti-slavery mobilization, which acted in different spaces, garnering a vast and essential public for the advancement of abolitionism. In this light, we observe the abolitionist women founders and members of the Ave Libertas society, exploring their activities in the streets and theaters of Recife between 1884 and 1888. We verify how the association added to the construction of a Political Culture that used familiar symbols to strengthen the identity of the abolitionist movement. The political use of these spaces by the militants favored the awareness of the urban public, in the same way that the organization of large events in theaters, circuses, streets and squares helped the women's group to gain notoriety. Thus, the engagement of women collaborated to the creation of the abolitionist memory, besides conquering new political possibilities for 19th-century girls and women.
