Abstract

The article discusses the political articulations of Governor José Antônio Flores da Cunha during the celebrations of the Farroupilha Centenary in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul state, in 1935. Flores da Cunha, in promoting the festivities, engenders an attempt to build a republican and federalist memory of Rio Grande do Sul, from the “farroupilha hero” Bento Gonçalves. Therefore, as a corollary to this event, the equestrian monument of Bento Gonçalves should sensitize the present and invoke the past, making it memorable.
