Authentic for who?
The authenticity notion of the cultural heritage on the contemporaneity

In the area of conserving the cultural heritage, there is one concept that has been continuously discussed throughout the last years: authenticity. Even with the advances in constructing more substantial levels of understanding of this concept and in how verification should be performed, there is still a latent need for further probing down into what underpins it. This paper sets out to discuss authenticity in the contemporary world, in the perspective of understanding the meanings that have been applying in the theoretical and practical dimensions of conservation. To overcome the conceptual limitations identified in the area of urban conservation, it was essential to establish three other areas of study that ponder on these and bring insights into this topic: the theory and critique of art, the cultural tourism and the theory of cultural heritage conservation. As a result of this study, it was hoped to identify emerging questions about the authenticity that need to be considered when using it in the practice of conservation of cultural heritage.
