Libraries as Places of Memory
The case of Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil

This paper intends to understand how libraries can contribute to the process of preservation of cultural heritage, and how these institutions relate to the memory of the communities in which they operate. To achieve this, the theories and works of five important scholars are used as a framework, namely those of Maurice Halbwachs, Joel Candau, Michael Pollak, Pierre Nora and Llorenç Prats, who formed the theoretical study of memory, cultural heritage and places of memory. The following provides a brief outline of the historical trajectory of the main public libraries located in Rio Grande do Sul throughout the nineteenth century, focusing on the oldest state institution - the Biblioteca Rio-Grandense, and its relations with the local community, seeking to identify elements which cause it to be a place of memory for the society to which it belongs.
