History, Memory and Disputes regarding Representation of the Recent Past

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the polemic relationship between history and memory in the context of disputes over the depiction of recent dictatorial states. At a time of increasing public and political interest in the legacy of authoritarian repressive states and growing demands for justice, this discussion highlights disputes over truth and its meaning. This paper argues that in these debates - which features key figures such as judges, politicians, journalists and social scientists - the historian's participation is crucial, as their knowledge and insight are indispensable to the understanding of recent past.

Rodrigo Patto Sá Motta, Paulista State University UNESP

Possui graduação em História pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais(1990), mestrado em História pela mesma instituição (1993) e doutorado em História pela Universidade de São Paulo (2000). Realizou estudos de pós-doutorado e atuou como professor-pesquisador visitante na Universidade de Maryland (2006-2007). Atuou como Professor visitante na Universidad de Santiago de Chile (2009), na Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2015), no IHEAL da Universidade de Paris III (Cátedra Simón Bolivar, 2016), na Universidad Nacional de Rosario (2017), na Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento (2018), na Universidad Nacional de San Martín (2019) e no King's College London (2023).
