From political clashes to the places of memory
“The Constitutionalist Revolution” between warring failure and the triumph of ideals (1932-1934)

This study examines certain aspects of the jingoistic celebrations of “The Constitutionalist Revolution” of 1932, going back to the roots of its commemoration in the 1930’s. Considering how unfavourable the outcome was to the rebels, questions arise about the historical conditions that transformed a military defeat into a moral victory. These questions permeate the whole text, which brings to light the interesting process of the state’s post-rebellion recuperation, imposing a new power division in the Provisional Government. The struggle over the historical memory in this occasion plays an integral role in giving a boost to the State of São Paulo’s political reorganization, and further along it seizes the advantage of the construction of an acclaimed social place of the “Constitutionalist Revolution”.
