Joao Antonio and the Night of Lapa (Noturno da Lapa)

Abstract

This paper examines some margin notes that were made by Joao Antonio in the work Noturno da Lapa by Luis Martins from Antonio’s personal library. The research on these notations along with statements from interviews with Joao Antonio, elucidate specific elements of his own aesthetic development. His antithetical stance toward Luis Martins’ narrative reveals literary beliefs founded on the necessity for the conscientious writer to approach reality with a clear agenda for social protest. The margin notes, besides acting as a record of Joao Antonio’s aesthetic points of view, provide examples of explicit dialogue between the reader, the work and the literary context of the time, as proposed in Mikhail Bakhtin’s studies on dialogism. This study helps to confirm the importance of such extratextual elements as a source of reflection on the thought and the aesthetic development of a writer.

Clara Ávila Ornellas, Paulista State University UNESP

Licenciada em Letras, com habilitação em Português/Inglês, (UFMS, 1993), mestrado em Semiótica e Linguística Geral (USP, 1998), doutorado em Literatura Brasileira (USP, 2004), pós-doutorado em Literatura Brasileira (UNESP/Assis, 2008 e 2011) e pós-doutorado em Estudos Comparados de Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa (USP, 2022). Atualmente, é mestranda na subárea de História da Educação (FEUSP). Tem experiência como docente de ensino médio, graduação e pós-graduação, e possui interesse principalmente nos seguintes temas e áreas: literatura brasileira, espaço urbano e literatura, exclusão social, Mikhail Bakhtin, João Antônio, Lima Barreto, Roberto Arlt, Graciliano Ramos, Marques Rebelo, acervo literário, leitura e produção de textos, escrita acadêmica, saberes e aprendizagens à margem social e História da Educação.
