Examining Ida Pfeiffer's story from a cross-cultural perspective

Abstract

In the last few decades historians have been acknowledging the importance of specific contexts in the practical discourses through which historical meanings are textually built up. However, the studies on historiography frequently refrain from a more accurate ideological examination of the relationships that a historical discourse keeps among who has produced it, who read it during its time and who has been reading it today. This article aims at reflecting upon this issue based on accounts made by Ida Pfeiffer, a prominent Austrian traveler who narrates her stay in Rio de Janeiro in 1847. In this paper some stereotypes will be highlighted which are still surprisingly current nowadays.

Professor Titular Aposentado da Faculdade de Letras da UFRJ, possui Graduação em Português Alemão pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1986), Atualização em Língua e Literatura Alemã pela Universidade de Freiburg (Alemanha), Mestrado em Língua e Literatura Alemã pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1992), Doutorado em Letras (Língua e Literatura Alemã) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1999). Estágios de Pós-Doutorado na Universidade de Viena (2009-2010) e na Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (2018). Coordena o Grupo de Pesquisa LIEDH - Linguagem e Discursos da História, credenciado junto à Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (http://www.liedh.letras.ufrj.br/). Pesquisador Bolsista PNAP (Fundação Biblioteca Nacional) em 2007/2008 e em 2022.
