Political relations for the establishment of the first TV stations in Paraná in the 1960s

Abstract

In October and December 1960, two TV stations were opened in Curitiba – TV Paranaense and TV Parana respectively. Thus, a full 10 years behind Sao Paulo, the two first broadcasting TV channels started operating on a regular basis in the state of Parana. In September 1963, TV Coroados in the city of Londrina, Parana, the first station outside the capital city of Curitiba, was established. In 1967 and 69 two other channels started operating: TV Iguaçu in Curitiba and TV Tibagi in Apucarana. Both stations belonged to the state governor at that time, Paulo Pimentel, and were the first concessions given by the military government. The aim of this paper is to narrate the history, analyse and interpret the politics between the media executives and the federal government authorities – almost always negotiated at the Palacio Iguaçu, the government headquarters – for the granting of the concessions for these five stations. The negotiations were successful only due to the fact that there were mutual interests for both parties; the entrepreneurs from Parana and the national leaders’ political plans.
