MONARCHY OR REPUBLIC?
THE SUBJECT IN THE NEWS GAZETTE AND THE OPINION OF MACHADO DE ASSIS
Keywords:
Monarchy, Republic, Machado de Assis's opinion, MolièreAbstract
During the year of 1833, the measurement of the lands wich was heritated by the Count d”Eu and his wife, reflected in a bad way in the Senate and provocated an argument about wich kind of governement was cheaper, the monarchy in force or the republic. Machado de Assis presents his opinion in a chronicle wrote to the session “Balas de Estalo” of the brazilian newspaper Gazeta de Notícias. Using the codename “Lélio”, he analyses the problem with humour and suggests an unexpected solution, using a phrase of Molière to illustrates his thought. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how a newspaper’s notice makes Machado take french verses from a classical piece and place them in a mocking carioca chronicle approaching Lélio, Sosie and anarchy.
