WOMEN IN CARNIVAL IMAGERY IN THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO IN THE 1920s

Abstract

In this text, we aim to examine the feminine presence in the carnival of São Paulo city during the 1920’s. We will focus on visual elaborations considered as a significant source of register of São Paulo carnivals. We will study the articulations between these elaborations and the social universe of which they are part of, and yet, the inherent particularities pertaining to the language. Among so many kinds of costumes and following the spirit of these celebrations, the women from São Paulo dressed up as Pierrots, princesses, prisoners, gypsies, Spaniards trying to entertain themselves and the other with their mockeries and irreverence, criticizing the customs of the Brazilian society.

Author Biography

Zélia Lopes Silva, Paulista State University UNESP

Possui graduação em História pela Universidade de Brasília (1975), mestrado em História pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1982), doutorado em História Social pela Universidade de São Paulo (1992) e livre docência em História do Brasil (2004) pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, com tese sobre carnaval em São Paulo. Professora adjunta da UNESP. Lecionou no Departamento de História até 31 de outubro de 2014. Continua vinculada a Pós-Graduação da mesma Universidade. Dirigiu, de novembro de 2011 a novembro de 2014, o Centro de Documentação e Apoio à Pesquisa - CEDAP, da UNESP campus de Assis. Fez parte do Conselho editorial e foi editor da revista online Patrimônio e Memória (CEDAP, de 2005 a 31 de outubro de 2014.
