WOMEN IN CARNIVAL IMAGERY IN THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO IN THE 1920s

In this text, we aim to examine the feminine presence in the carnival of São Paulo city during the 1920’s. We will focus on visual elaborations considered as a significant source of register of São Paulo carnivals. We will study the articulations between these elaborations and the social universe of which they are part of, and yet, the inherent particularities pertaining to the language. Among so many kinds of costumes and following the spirit of these celebrations, the women from São Paulo dressed up as Pierrots, princesses, prisoners, gypsies, Spaniards trying to entertain themselves and the other with their mockeries and irreverence, criticizing the customs of the Brazilian society.
