Abstract

The National Democratic Union (UDN) was a political party that moved between liberalism and conservatism. With a discourse of modernizing the country, the party aligned itself with international capital and followed a more privatizing and pro-subsidiary line, in addition to also having a strong influence in the agrarian sector and the urban middle classes, as it remained distant from the working class and had little popular support. This article seeks to bring a debate about the UDN's performance in the historical and political context of the Cold War, that is, in a context of geopolitical dispute between the Soviet Union and the United States, and how this event influenced Brazilian domestic politics and Latin America. Thus, the methodology is a bibliographic review of istorical-political nature, but also sociological, since it dialogues with the theory of social classes and their forms of representation. The works used to understand the party were those of Picaluga (1980), Benevides (1981) and Mendonça (2002), chosen because they contain a wide range of information about the object studied, as well as because they are analyses more grounded in the historiography of the UDN and its political agents.
