Abstract

The Greek Civil War (1943-1949) was the armed clash between the Hellenic Monarchy, supported by Britain and the USA, and the guerrilla movement led by the Greek Communist Party (KKE). Although the conflict officially ended in 1949 with the Communists defeated, its effects echoed in Greece throughout the 20th Century. The hardships over reconciliation, the battles over memory, the tensions and customary acts of repression and violence, promoted and/or encouraged by successive authoritarian governments, made it notably difficult to critically evaluate the civil war inside Greece, while the debate worldwide was greatly influenced by the Cold War. We intend to review de main historiographic tendencies of Greek Civil War interpretation — traditionalist, revisionist, post-revisionist — and emphasize how the historiography was impacted by Greek political history from 1950 onwards and by the dispute between USA and USSR.
