The 1619 Project and the American national memory in dispute

This article analyzes the conflict between the U.S. national imaginary and The 1619 Project (2019), proposed by The New York Times Magazine (NY, 1851 - present), using the concepts of inherited memory and framed memory (Pollak, 1989, 1992). The discussion considers sociopolitical disputes among groups with different perspectives, drawing on the concept of whiteness (Bento, 2022), understood as a narcissistic expression of self-preservation of the universal man. The analysis of the political, social, and economic context is based on the notion of structural racism (Almeida, 2019), aiming to understand the background of these tensions. To deepen the debate on white fear and the position of Black Americans, the work draws on James Baldwin's (1967) reflections on the Black American and the violent reactions of whiteness. Finally, the article examines the Black Lives Matter movement in contrast to All Lives Matter.
