COMIC REPRESENTATIONS OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC IN THE LITERARY COLUMN “DIÁLOGUES” (1895-1899)

Abstract

The literary column “Diálogos” of Figueiredo Coimbra started to be published on July 23rd, 1895 in the periodical of Rio de Janeiro A notícia. In the “Diálogos”, we can realize the appearance of representatives or ministers talking about the politics of the country in various texts. At this time, the people who were fighting for power were conservative and liberal. Many texts focus on the issue of the defense of the Republic and on how the politicians changed their minds and parties, the attitudes of the candidates in their campaigns, the duality of the government and even the functioning of the system of government. Therefore, through the “Diálogos” we can realize a comic portrait of the situations which occurred with the advent of the Republic, more particularly in the period of publication of the column (1895-1899).
